Weight

380–500g

The keel-billed toucan is mostly black with a bright yellow neck and chest edged below by a narrow red band, red undertail coverts, a red tip to the tail and blue feet. The huge bill, about a third of the bird's length, is mainly green with a red tip and orange sides; it is made of light, hollow bone covered in keratin and may also help regulate body temperature through its many blood vessels. The sexes look alike apart from size (Wikipedia, general species account).

Toucans are social and rarely seen alone, moving through the forest in small flocks of about six to twelve with slow, undulating flight of six to ten rapid wingbeats then a glide. They roost in tree holes 3–27m up, several birds to a hole, with the tail folded over the back and the bill tucked along it. Within the group they play, duelling with their bills and tossing fruit to each other (Wikipedia, general species account).

A team of researchers in Costa Rica in 2018 reported what may be the first toucan observed eating carrion (Wikipedia, general species account). On this guide it is a target species of Tortuguero, La Selva, Cahuita and Arenal.
